Though I'm a total newbie with the command line. I have some back up hardware which I could use for a Linux system. I'm not using Linux (yet), it's something I definitely want to try and learn in the future. This is what I'll be looking into soon for setting up my pushed-from-windows backups. Open source and supports many types of destinations. it has a -backup-dir flag for versioning. Likewise if you want something that is primarily a syncing tool, there's rclone (CLI).If you just want a mainly syncing GUI program like SyncBack, there's also - which has some features to rename versions instead of deleting/overwriting them.Archives can be mounted, but only on linux. open source, command line, does client-side encryption and dedupe. - I've never actually used it, but it's similar to Borg (which is Linux only). But yeah, I've also heard it can be a bit buggy. Duplicati - I've used it a couple of times, yeah good that it's open source and supports many types of destination servers. So I don't have any definitive answers, but a few thoughts / things you could investigate: I've setup many backup systems and done heaps of research into it all, but in most cases ended up running Linux stuff.

Paid software is no problem if the software has advantages over the average free/open source alternatives. So I'm looking for software recommendations from people who preferably are backing up for years as well and (kind of) know what they're doing.

They're often kind of sluggish, do a ton of things I don't need it to do and so on.Īlso it backups into one file/image and I prefer loose/separate files (so mirror/files in original state) so that I can check immediately on my NAS in my back up if something goes wrong on my PC or vica versa. I don't really like these kind of 'suite' software programs. On one hand the deal seems almost to good to pass on, but.

Now through an OEM version that can be upgraded to the full version with discount thanks to a very kind and helpful Acronis rep here on Reddit I can get it for a very very good price. I get the error: Found xxxxx files that are missing from the remote storage, please run repair. Furthermore, when you edit anything in a profile it simply doesn't run anymore.

Though it seems to have quite some bugs since it's a beta and I don't know if I want/should (to) trust it for backing up my important files.

Although a lot of back up software might have this functionality as well, but I'm not sure/aware about that. This might come in handy when I go travel in the future and want to back up my laptop to my NAS. Like the idea of the software and the fact that it's open source, you can access it through a browser and remotely (I assume). Which isn't the biggest problem if this proofs to suit my needs the best. Like it very much, lightweight, easy to setup and use, very clear and simple UI, but rather expensive.I tried quite some alternatives years ago of which I can't remember the names.

But I got sick of it after getting so much errors due to character deviations in file names (not sure how else to call it) in my music collection after every back up job.Īlso, they stripped the free version heavily a few years ago so I used an old version which has more functionality. I back up to my Synology NAS and I used to use the free version of SyncBack for many many years.

I'm on Windows 10 and looking for backing up my files, so not system backups (only) software. So please no "I'm using Sony's: my first back up and that works fine for me" type of comments.
